Foxy
Lady

This fly is one that can represent many different creatures that fish
feed on. Stripped fast and off the bottom it looks much like a small minnow,
fished slow and on the bottom, it can easily become a crab or shrimp. The lead
eyes get it to the bottom quickly and have makes for a good jigging action. As
with most flies the flash is very important to catch a hungry fishes eye, and
this fly does just that.
Materials:
Hook: Saltwater, standard
length, Mustad 3407/34007
Thread: Burnt orange unithread
Eyes: X-small lead dumbbell
Tail: Fox fur and gold Flashabou
Body: Gold tinsel yarn
Under wing: Gold Flashabou
Upper wing: Fox fur and Gold Flashabou
Weed guard: 50lb monofilament
Instructions:

Insert your hook into the vise and tie on 1/8” from the eye.

By using figure 8 wraps secure the lead dumbbell eyes to the top of the hook
shank. A drop of superglue can be added to give extra strength to the eyes.

Work your thread back to the bend and cut a clump of fox fur. Make sure to keep
in both the longer guard hairs and the shorter under fur. Tie this in along the
shank from the eyes back to the bend. Secure with thread.

Cut several strands of gold Flashabou as long as the tail. Tie these in around
the tail.

Cut a 4” strand of gold tinsel yarn at the bend of the hook.

Wrap the tinsel yarn forward. Use figure 8 wraps again to cover the tie in part
for the eyes. Tie off the tinsel yarn directly in front of the dumbbell eyes and
trip off the excess.

Rotate the fly so the hook is now hook point up. Cut several strands of gold
Flashabou the length of the entire fly from hook eye to the end of the tail. Tie
these in directly in front of the dumbbell eyes.

Cut another clump of fox fur and tie in on top of the Flashabou under wing.

More Flashabou can be added around the fox fur wing. Keep these strands only as
long as the wing to prevent twisting around the hook bend.

Wrap the head with thread and cut a 2” section of 50 lb monofilament for the
weed guard. Tie this in at the head and bend it up to cover the hook point.

Finish off the fly by covering the head with thread, whip finishing, and cutting
off the thread. Trim the weed guard to be just above the hook point. Cement the
head and let dry.
This is a very simple fly to tie and can be great for tailing redfish in
slightly deeper water. The lead eyes add weight to get the fly to the bottom,
but with the bushy tail and wing the fly will still land quietly on the water.
The fur and Flashabou used also gives a lot of action in the water with very
little movement.
